Catacombe di san Gaudioso
Santa Maria della Sanità, Via Sanità, 14, Napoli, 80136 NA, Italia
In Naples there’s always something to discover you didn’t know about. Just in the Sanità area there are not one, not two, but three catacombs! So, today’s plan is going to visit San Gaudosio catacombs. He was an African martyr just like San Gennaro!
These are located underneath the Church of Santa Maria from Sanità and you can have access to them from the stairs right in the middle of the Basilica, where the martyr’s body became an object of faith for the locals. Who knows if Gaudioso would have ever imagined getting more “followers” then Kim Kardashian…
These catacombs are just incredible: from their frescos – which portray death – and skulls of real people (which apparently inspired the very famous poetry A’livella by Totò), to the very famous painting La Madonna col Bambino (the most ancient painting you can find in Naples); to its altar and its Early Christian throne.
Have you ever seen a colourful subterranean cemetery anywhere in the world? Yes, we have. Here!
